“Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD Almighty…” – Isaiah 6:3
Just as God is eternal, another essential characteristic is
that He is holy. In the Bible, the term “holy” is often referred to that which
is “separate” and distinct from everything else. Secondly, it’s referred to
that which is perfect or morally pure. All in all, God’s holiness is what separates Him from all His
creation. [1]
Consider the special days in your life. These days are set
apart from all other days, like your birthday or anniversary of some sort. In
his teaching series, The Holiness of God,
Dr. R.C. Sproul observes how we all have sacred days of special importance
which we celebrate in moments of time. Each year we also celebrate holidays. Holidays are in essence “holy days”, different from the ordinary
days because they are special, “set apart for a particular kind of
remembrance.” In a greater sense then, God Himself is holy and His holiness
is what sets Him apart from all His
creation.[2]
Sadly, the lack of awareness of God’s holiness is
demonstrated in how His name is often frivolously used as a curse word. Having
an awareness of God’s holiness ultimately begins when we put our faith and
trust in the perfect and pure sinless Savior, Jesus Christ. On the basis of
this most important relationship, we will not only begin to revere God as holy
– gazing at Him in wonder at His awesome majesty - but also recognize our
divine call to humbly mirror and reflect His character, in the power of His
Spirit, to a fallen and broken world.
“Holy, holy, holy, is
the LORD Almighty…”
